Mozzarella And Tomato Melts

4 slices italian bread -- each 1 inch thick
8 ounces mozzarella cheese -- sliced
2 medium tomatoes -- thinly sliced
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper to taste
1/2 cup prepared pesto

Preparation / Directions:

Set oven control to broil. Place bread on rack in broiler pan. Broil with tops about 4 inches from heat until golden brown; turn. Divide cheese among bread slice. Broil just until cheese begins to melt. Arrange tomatoes on cheese. Sprinkle with pepper. Top with pesto. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired
