From the Reader's Swap column of The Dallas Morning News. The name apparently alludes to the attraction flies felt to its sweet molasses. This pie originated in Pennsylvania. If a cup of raisins were added it is called Funeral Pie.
 

Ingredients:


---CRUMB TOPPING:

2 Cup flour

3/4 Cup dark brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon

1/2 Cup Crisco

---PIE:

1 Cup dark molasses

1/2 Cup dark brown sugar

2 large eggs

1 Cup hot water

1 teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in the hot water

2 crust unbaked pie shells 8-inch
 

Preparation / Directions:


Preheat oven to 400 F. Make Crumb Topping. TOPPING: Sift together flour, dark brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Cut in Crisco until crumbs form.PIE: mix olasses, brown sugar, eggs and water (with baking soda added) thoroughly. It's not necessary to use an electric mixer. Divide syrup mixture into two pie shells. Add half the crumb mixture to each. Or make layers, alternating syrup with crumb topping. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 F and bake 50 minutes more. Cool before serving
