Manhattan Clam Chowder 4

1/4 pound salt pork
2 large onions -- chopped
1 Medium carrot -- diced
1 cup chopped celery
1 Medium green pepper -- diced
2 cups cooked tomatoes
4 cups water
1/4 Teaspoon thyme
1/4 Teaspoon salt and pepper
2 dozen large clams -- shucked and minced
1 package crackers

Preparation / Directions:

Dice salt pork, brown and remove cracklings from fat. Brown onions, carrot, celery and green pepper lightly in the fat. Add tomatoes, water and seasonings. Cook for 10 minutes. Add clams with liquor and simmer until tender. Thicken with crushed crackers.
