Grilled Onions

6 medium onions -- peeled
6 tablespoons butter or oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Preparation / Directions:

Halve the onions and arrange them on a greased grill rack. Dot with butter, and grill over medium coals until tinged with black and brown, nearly charred. Baste them with more butter or oil as necessary to keep moist. Season with salt and pepper. Serve hot or chilled.
