Apple Frosting For Gingerbread

1 large egg white unbeaten
1 cup sugar
1 medium apple -- peeled and grated
1 dash cream of tartar
1 1/2 cups solid shortening
8 large egg whites
2 1/2 pounds sifted powdered sugar

Preparation / Directions:

Beat white of egg with part of sugar. Add cream of tartar. When quite stiff, add grated apple gradually. This should be used immediately as standing will cause it to separate.
