Ingredients:

8 slices white bread -- trimmed

1/4 cup butter

4 slices cooked ham -- thin slices

4 slices Swiss cheese -- thin slices

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon water

Preparation / Directions:

Butter slices of bread. Make four sandwiches by placing a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss cheese between two slices of bread. Tie with a string. In a dish, combine eggs and water and beat lightly together. Dip sandwiches in egg mixture. In large skillet, heat remaining butter. Add sandwiches and cook over medium flame for 10 minutes on each side, or until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. Dry on paper towel. Discard string. Serve hot. Comments: Croque-Monsieur is usually served as an hors-d'oeuvre; but served with a tomato sauce and accompanied by a tossed green salad, it makes a good luncheon main dish.
