Cinnamon Crunch Walnut Loaf

1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts divided
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 cup granulated sugar divided
2 teaspoons cinnamon
3 cups flour
4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 large egg
1 1/4 cups milk

Preparation / Directions:

Toss the walnuts with melted butter. Add 1/4 cup of the sugar with the cinnamon and mix until walnuts are well coated; set aside. Mix flour, with remaining 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Beat egg lightly and combine with milk. Stir into dry mixture just until all of flour is moistened. reserve 1/4 c of the spiced walnuts for top of loaf; lightly mix remainder into the batter. Spoon into a greased 9 1/4 x 5 1/4 x 2 3/4 loaf pan. Sprinkle with reserved walnuts. Let stand 15 minutes. Bake 350 for 65-70 minutes, until loaf tests done. Let stand 10 minutes. Turn out and serve
