Vinaigre

French for vinegar.

Viennese coffee

Vichy water

A naturally effervescent/sparkling mineral water from the springs at Vichy.

Viande

The French word for meat.

Vichyssoise

Vichyssoise is a French-style soup made of pureed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock. It is usually served cold.

Verte

The French phrase for green sauce. A sauce verte is simply green colored mayonnaise.

Scotch broth

Scotch broth is a filling soup, originating in Scotland but now obtainable world wide. Its principal ingredients are usually barley, a cheap cut of beef or lamb, and vegetables such as carrots, turnips or swedes, cabbage and leeks. The proportions and ingredients can vary according to the recipe.

Scotch Egg

A Scotch egg is a snack food of Scottish origin consisting of a hard-boiled egg, removed from its shell, wrapped in a sausage meat mixture, coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. It is eaten cold, typically with salad and pickles.

Scrapple

ScrappleScrapple is a savory cornmeal pudding in which the cornmeal is simmered with pork scraps and trimmings, then cooled and hardened into a loaf.

Screwdriver

Screwdriver is a cocktail made with orange juice and vodka named after the tool. Its name originated in the 1950’s when American oil-rig workers in the Middle East did not have a swizzle stick handy while drinking on break and so used a screwdriver instead.
