"Extra-fine" sugar has smaller crystals, which dissolve better in cold liquids. Any summer fruit would be great in this sparkling drink, except watermelon—it makes the drink watery. If time is short, buy cut-up fruit salad in the produce section.

Ingredients:

4 cups dry or semi-dry white wine

1 cup orange juice

1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Triple Sec or Cointreau, or peach brandy

3 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons extra-fine granulated sugar

2 cups chilled sparkling water

2 cups sliced peaches, nectarines, oranges, lemons, plums, and/or sweet cherries with stems

1 quart Ice cubes

Preparation / Directions:

1. In a large jar or pitcher stir together white wine, orange juice, orange liqueur, lemon juice, and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Cover and refrigerate mixture until ready to serve.

2. Just before serving, add the chilled sparkling water and sliced fruits; stir gently. Pour sangria over ice cubes in tall glasses. Add some of the fruit to each serving.
