Bread Pudding with Meringue

Ingredients:


2 Cup stale bread (crumbled)

2 Cup stale white -- yellow, or pound cake (crumbled)

1/4 teaspoons salt

3 Cup warm milk

1/2 Cup sugar

3 large eggs

1 teaspoons vanilla

1/2 teaspoons grated nutmeg

1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 Cup raisins

---Meringue

2 large egg whites

1/2 Cup sugar

1/4 teaspoons cream of tartar

1/2 teaspoons vanilla
 

Preparation / Directions:


Soak crumbled bread and cake for 20 minutes in milk with salt added. Combine eggs, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg. Beat very well. Pour mixture over bread mixture and stir lightly. Stir in raisins. Steam tightly covered with foil in pan set in hot water for about 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove foil. Cover with meringue (below) and bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Serve warm with sugar. Beat egg whites until foamy. Continue beating as you add other ingredients a little at a time. Beat until stiff peaks form.
