MAPLE-NUT BREAD

Ingredients:


1 package Regular or quick-acting -- Active dry yeast

1/4 cup Warm water (105 -- To 115 degrees)

3 cups All-purpose* or -- Unbleached flour

2/3 cup Buttermilk

1/4 cup Shortening

2 tablespoons Packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon Baking powder

3/4 teaspoon Salt

1/3 cup Maple-flavored syrup

1 cup Coarsely chopped walnuts -- Toasted if desired
 

Preparation / Directions:


*if using self-rising flour omit Baking powder and salt. Dissolve yeast in warm water in large bowl. Stir in 1-1/2 cups of the flour, the buttermilk, shortening, sugar, baking powder, salt and syrup until smooth. Stir in remaining flour and walnuts until dough forms. Turn dough onto floured surface. Knead gently about 1 minute or until smooth. Cover and let rise 10 minutes.Grease cookie sheet. Shape dough into round loaf, about 8 inches in diameter. Place on cookie sheet. Cover and let rise in warm place 30 minutes.Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cut an X shape about 1/2 inch deep in top of the bread. Bake about 35 minutes or until golden brown; cool slightly. Tear bread into pieces, or cut into slices.
