Ingredients:

4 cups flour

1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda

1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons sugar

3/4 stick butter

2 1/2 tablespoons black treacle -- (molassas)

1 Cup buttermilk -- as needed

Preparation / Directions:

Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl. Melt the butter with the treacle and add it to the flour mixture. Mix in enough buttermilk to make a firm dough (about 1 1/4 cups). Knead this a little. Roll the dough to 2 inch thickness. Make 4 "farls" or quarters by cutting a cross in the top. Bake in the center of a 400 degree oven for 40 minutes. Tape the loaf for a hollow sound. When it is done, put is on a wire rack and cover with a tea cloth.
