   3      tablespoons   ghee or vegetable oil -- (or 2 tbsp olive
                        -- oil
   2      teaspoons     cumin seeds
     1/2  whole         dried red chili
     1/4  teaspoon      yellow asafetida powder or hing in hindi
                        -- and bengali

   2                    medium-sized tomatoes -- cut into 8 pieces
   1      teaspoon      salt
