Pacchimirapakai Kharam (Fried Green Chile Chutney)

Ingredients:

     1/2  pound         green chiles
                        tamarind -- the size of a lemon
   1      tablespoon    peeled broken black gram dal -- (urad dal)
   1      teaspoon      fenugreek seeds
   1      teaspoon      black mustard seeds
   1      pinch         asafetida
   1      pinch         turmeric
                        salt -- to taste
   4      tablespoons   oil
 

Preparation:

1. Clean the green chiles. Dry well. 2. Pour 2 tbsp. oil in the frying pan and fry the green chiles for two minutes. Remove and cool. 3. Pour 2 more tbsp. oil in the pan and fry the mustard seeds, fenugreek, black gram, asafetida and turmeric. Remove and cool. (Keep the strained oil aside.) 4. Grind with green chiles, tamarind, and salt. Top with the strained oil.
