Lemon Dal (Nimmakai Pappu)

Ingredients:

     1/2  cup           tur gram -- (toor or toovar dal)
     1/2  large         lemon
   1      pinch         turmeric
   1      large         piec  ginger
   2                    green chiles
   1                    stem curry leaves
   1      tablespoon    oil
     1/2  teaspoon      black gram dal -- (urad dal)
     1/2  teaspoon      black mustard seeds
   1                    red chile
   1      pinch         asafetida
                        salt -- to taste
 

Preparation:

1. Extract lemon juice. 2. Peel the ginger and chop finely. Chop the green chiles finely. Clean and pluck curry leaves. 3. Boil the tur gram well. 4. Add salt and turmeric and cook. Remove when thick. Add lemon juice, green chiles, curry leaves and ginger. 5. Break red chile into pieces. Fry black gram, mustard seeds, red chile and asafetida. Add to dal as seasoning.
