Poppy Seed Sugar Loaves

Ingredients:

   3      cups          all-purpose flour
     1/2  teaspoon      salt
   1 1/2  teaspoons     baking powder
   2      tablespoons   poppy seeds
   2      cups          granulated sugar
   1 1/2  cups          vegetable oil
   3      large         eggs
   1 1/2  teaspoons     vanilla extract
   1 1/2  teaspoons     almond extract
   1 1/2  cups          milk
     1/4  cup           orange juice
     1/2  cup           granulated sugar
     1/2  teaspoon      almond extract
 

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Stir together the flour, salt, baking powder and poppy seeds in a bowl. Set aside. Beat together the sugar, oil, eggs and extract until creamy. Gently blend in dry ingredients in 3 additions, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. DO NOT OVERMIX. Pour batter into 2 buttered (standard) loaf pans. Bake in the center of oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a loaf comes out clean. Place on a rack to cool. While the bread is baking, combine glaze ingredients in a small bowl, stirring to dissolve sugar as much as possible. Orange juice, sugar, almond extr. Brush glaze over hot loaves. Cool before removing from pans. Makes 2 loaves. This almond flavored tea bread has a fine texture. It slices beautifully.
