OLD-FASHIONED GINGERBREAD

Ingredients:

     1/4           cup  sugar
  1              large  egg
  1                cup  all-purpose flour
  1           teaspoon  baking soda
     1/4      teaspoon  ground ginger
     1/4      teaspoon  ground cinnamon
  1              Pinch  salt
     1/2           cup  molasses
     1/2           cup  boiling water
  2        tablespoons  butter or margarine
  1                     round paper doily       (8-inch)
                        Powdered sugar
 

Preparation:

Beat sugar and egg at medium speed with an electric mixer until blended. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; gradually add to sugar mixture, beating at low speed until blended. Add molasses; beat until blended. Stir together water and butter until butter melts; add to molasses mixture, beating until blended. Pour into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Place doily on cake; sift with powdered sugar. Remove doily to reveal pattern.
