Mom's Portuguese Bean Soup

Ingredients:

  1              pound  dry kidney beans
  3             pounds  ham hocks
  3             cloves  garlic -- (large), minced
  1         tablespoon  salt
                        pepper
  5        tablespoons  worcestershire sauce
  1              large  maui onion -- diced
  4              large  potatoes -- cubed
  4              large  carrots -- sliced
  1              large  miko -- (hot) portuguese
                        -- sausage, sliced
                        -- 1/4" thick
  1                can  tomato sauce -- (8 oz)
  1              small  maui cabbage -- chopped
 

Preparation:

Soak beans overnight. Drain. Place beans in large soup pot and cover with water. Add all other ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer 3 hours or longer. Add water, if necessary. Remove ham hocks. Give your favorite cat or dog the bones, skin and fat. Break up the meat and return it to the soup. Add cabbage and simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
