Cheap, Easy Split Pea Soup

Ingredients:

  1                     ham bone or
  2             slices  cooked bacon
  1              pound  split or whole dried peas
  1              large  onion -- grated
  2                     carrots -- grated
  8               cups  water
                        salt -- to taste
                        lots of pepper
 

Preparation:

Toss all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours, covered. Remove bone and cut any remaining meat away. Dice and return to soup.
