Preparation:
In a medium mixing Bowl, beat together shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Blend flour, soda, and salt; mix in thoroughly. Form into rolls about 2 1/2 inches across, wrap securely and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled and firm. Slice 1/8th inch thick and bake on ungreased cookie sheet 8 to 10 minutes at 400. Remove from pan immediately and cool on wire rack.
