Whether you're serving yourself or a crowd, presentation is very important aspect of a meal. Garnishes are one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to enhance any dish. More often than not, the simpler the garnish the better. If you take a look at the photoes of food in cookbooks and in your favorite magazines, you'll discover all sorts of clever ideas for garnishes. Have fun trying some of these techniques, as well, or experiment with some of your own. Top it: A sprinkle here, a smidgen there, can add color and highlights to a plate. Try sesame seeds, pine nuts, chopped chives, toasted walnuts, julienned green and red bell peppers or lemon slices. For holiday platters, try a dash of red caviar. The Flourish: Larger sprigs of herbs provide textural interest. Try fresh parsley, cilantro (for Tex Mex chicken dishes), watercress and sage (for roasted chicken). Fruits are equally appealing. Add red or green table grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe or kiwi slices (for chicken salads). Petal Pushers: Make every plate a centerpiece with edible flower garnishes. Try pansies, violets, lilacs, rose petals and squash blossoms. Note, however that some flowers and plants, such as sweet peas, poinsettias and mistletoe, are poisonous, so use caution when choosing. If you're not postive it's edible, don't eat it! On the border: This restaurant technique is used to create a unique border on a rim of a plate. Make a repeating pattern of fresh herbs, spices and minced vegetables (for example, cilantro leaves alternating with chopped red peppers). For desserts, sprinkle powdered sugar, chocolate or cinnamon around the border with a shaker can. Yet another approach is to fill a ketchup or mustard squirt bottle with chocolate or raspberry sauce and create a zigzag pattern. Dish it up: Some foods are as good to serve as they are to eat. For example, try serving chicken chili in a hollowed-out roll, using a cleaned pumpkin to serve squash soup, or placing a small boquet of flowers in a bell pepper with the top r
