Scottish Raspberries

Due to the difficulties of growing strawberries in a cooler climate, a group of market gardeneners in Angus in the early 20th century set up a cooperative of raspberry growers which ultimately led to the Tayside region becoming the most important UK raspberry-growing region, producing 80% of the UK commercial crop. The long hours of summer daylight and relatively dry summers allow the fruit to mature slowly providing a well-flavoured fruit.

In 1992 the Scottish Soft Fruit Growers Ltd. was set up and all members now commit their raspberries destined for processing to the group. For the local raspberry-lover, "Pick your Own" farms abound during the summer, providing a fun way of getting hold of the freshest raspberries.
